Friends, as we all know, many questions related to the motor are asked in the interview of Electrical. So today, we will talk about a very important question in this post, what is armature? And also, we will understand the difference between armature winding and field winding.
Friends, this question becomes very important because most people give the wrong answer to this question.
As you can see in the photo, many people call it armature. They say that if the winding is done on the rotor, we call it armature. But friends, this answer is completely wrong.
So now, what is the correct answer to this? What is armature?
So, friends, the armature is easy to understand. To understand it better, we should know what it is rotor.
What is Rotor?
Friends, if we talk about motor or generator, then the part which rotates in both, we call it rotor. A rotor is a rotating part. By rotating, we mean that part of the machine which rotates is called the rotor.
Friends, now you have to understand what a rotor is. But First, we let us understand what is an armature.
What is Armature?
Friends, if you see the full name of armature, then its full name is armature winding.
Whether we talk about an AC motor or DC motor, every motor has two types of winding:
- field winding
- Armature winding
Note: If anywhere Armature is written, then it means Armature winding.
Now, if you think that what is armature winding and what is field winding? Friends these both are the simple things. If you have to understand about field winding and armature winding then you have to understand the working of motor. So let’s give an overview on working of motor?
How Motor Works?
Friends, the working of the motor is very easy, you can understand it in this way: Whenever we give three phase supply on the stator of the motor, a magnetic field is generated on the stator. When this magnetic field links on our rotor. So due to this magnetic field a force is exerted on our rotor, and due to the force our rotor starts rotating.
Note: When the magnetic field of the stator links on the rotor, a force on the rotor as well as an EMF is generated in the rotor.
You have to keep this point in mind because when we understand armature winding then if you keep this point in mind then it will be much easier to understand. So let us now understand armature winding and field winding one by one and then finally we are going to discuss some important points as well.
What is Field Winding?
Friends, we had just understood the working of the motor above, that when we give three phase supply to the stator, the stator generates a magnetic field. Friends, you always have to keep one thing in mind that whatever winding is making or generating a magnetic field, that is what we call field winding.
That is, in the case of the motor, the winding that is done on the stator, we call it field winding because the stator winding generates magnetic field.
Friends, you have understood that what is field winding, now it is the turn to understand armature winding, so let’s understand what is armature winding.
What is Armature Winding?
Armature winding is called the winding where EMF is generated. Above we told you in a point that when the magnetic field links with the rotor, along with the force on the rotor, an EMF is also generated in the rotor, and a current starts flowing.
EMF is generated inside our rotor, it means we will call it armature winding. Friends, if you are still confused that which one is to be called field winding and which one is to be called armature winding, then let us explain you in very easy language.
If we talk about the motor, then the stator in it generates the magnetic field in most cases, that is, the field winding is on the stator itself. And by linking this magnetic field with the rotor, it generates an EMF, that is, EMF is generated in the rotor, which means the armature winding is on the rotor.
Note: It is not fixed that the stator will always generate a magnetic field as opposed to an induction motor in a brush-less motor. The rotor in it generates a magnetic field. That is, there is a field winding on the rotor and an armature winding on the stator.

If we talk about generator, then it is just opposite to induction motor, in this our field winding is above rotor and armature winding is above stator.
Now friends, if we come to the last question, which is if you ever want to know which field winding and armature winding are, then how will you find it.
How to find Armature winding and field winding?
Friends, it is very easy to find out armature winding and field winding, all you have to do is take a multimeter and measure the resistance of the stator and rotor one by one. By measuring the resistance with a multimeter, you have to see which winding has low resistance, if your rotor winding has low resistance, then armature winding on your rotor and the field winding on the stator. But if the resistance of your stator winding is low then there is armature winding on the stator.
Mean friends, the resistance of our armature winding is low and the resistance of the field winding is high.
Friends, this way you can easily find out the field winding and the armature winding.
